Mental Health Services—Hospital & Community Mental Health Services
Mental Health Services are provided by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. Services are organised within four Areas, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Cambridge, and Fenland and East Cambridgeshire. The Huntingdon services provide assessment, treatment and care to children, adults and older people with mental illness in the Huntingdon Area and works with a range of voluntary organisations. All services aim to be flexible around the age boundary. The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service cares for people up to the age of 17. Adult Mental Health Services care for people from 17 and 65. The Older Peoples Mental Health Service cares for people over the age of 65, also providing for patients with early onset dementia (under 65).
The Service is provided to people suffering from both acute and longer-term mental health problems, drug and alcohol problems, dementia and functional illness. Support is also given to relatives and carers both on an individual basis and through formal carer support programmes. An individual’s needs are assessed and care is delivered and co-ordinated using the Care Programme Approach. Each service user has a named Care Co-ordinator.
There are a number of local community services provided by the Mental Health Trust for those with mental health issues. In addition local voluntary groups offer support and activities such as day centres, clubs and visiting schemes.

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are based at the Newtown Centre in Huntingdon and provides assessment and treatment for children or adolescents under 17 years with emotional, behavioural and developmental problems. The service works closely with other agencies including education, social services and child health services. The team has a wide range of skills and experience. There are a number of professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and occupational therapists, family therapist, community paediatricians and primary mental health workers. There are also social workers in the team, employed by Cambridgeshire County Council. The service is open Monday to Friday. Referrals are accepted from GPs, and other primary are providers, education, social services and the voluntary sector.

It provides support for adults with long-term mental health problems in the north rural sector. Activities include creative writing, art, therapeutic support groups and practical help i.e. careers advice, training, life skills etc. Referrals are via the Community Mental Health Teams only. The site also provides the base for the North Rural Community Mental Health Team. Outpatient's clinics are also held at the centre by consultant pyschiatrists, pyschologists and the drug and alcohol services.

They are a voluntary fellowship of people who are alcoholics and who help each other to achieve and maintain sobriety by sharing experiences and mutual support. Telephone the local help line for information on regular group meetings. March have a local branch meeting on Friday evening at 8.00pm at St.Johns Church Hall, Queen Street.

The Beds & Cambs Rural Support Group is a local charity that offers a confidential listening, sign-posting and advice service to people faced with rural isolation, stress, homelessness, financial hardship and redundancy. The group operates through a network of contacts from farming and training organisations, local churches and trade unions and aims to identify the right source of help for people in difficulty and work with them to obtain it. Working and living in the countryside,
the volunteers can relate to problems at first hand and act as a bridge between those in need and the traditional support and benefit agencies, which are usually town based. They also know about specialist sources of assistance directed specifically at people employed in farming.

The Centre aims to respond to individual needs, to promote mental health, reduce the need for hospital admission and act as a stepping-stone for members to resume their lives in the community. The service is for up to 30 people a day in the age range of 16 - 65 years. it operates Monday to Friday between the hours of 9.15am - 4.15pm with Tuesday and Thursday evening support, alternate Sunday drop in and Saturday trips out once a month. An in-house meeting is held once a month to promote communication and involvement between the staff and members. Transport is available for those who have difficulty getting to the centre.

CADS offer free counselling, advice and information, to anyone who feels they have an alcohol or drug related problem, or are concerned about the risks of AIDS/HIV infection. Advice, information and support to family members, colleagues and friends of people misusing alcohol or other drugs.

Lifecraft is a voluntary organisation that is run by users and ex-users of the mental health services. As well as providing information about mental health problems, treatments and resources they also have a guide to complementary medicine that describes, among other things, how much research has been done on that particular therapy and whether there seems to be any scientific basis for it.

Lifeline is a Lifecraft Project that provides an out of hours mental health help line. The trained volunteers are on line to provide:

Someone who cares, someone who listens and someone who won't point a finger. Lifeline recognises the caller's absolute right to a confidential service.
