Mental Health Services—Hospital & Community Mental Health Services
Mental Health Services are provided by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. Services are organised within four Areas, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Cambridge, and Fenland and East Cambridgeshire. The Huntingdon services provide assessment, treatment and care to children, adults and older people with mental illness in the Huntingdon Area and works with a range of voluntary organisations. All services aim to be flexible around the age boundary. The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service cares for people up to the age of 17. Adult Mental Health Services care for people from 17 and 65. The Older Peoples Mental Health Service cares for people over the age of 65, also providing for patients with early onset dementia (under 65).
The Service is provided to people suffering from both acute and longer-term mental health problems, drug and alcohol problems, dementia and functional illness. Support is also given to relatives and carers both on an individual basis and through formal carer support programmes. An individual’s needs are assessed and care is delivered and co-ordinated using the Care Programme Approach. Each service user has a named Care Co-ordinator.
There are a number of local community services provided by the Mental Health Trust for those with mental health issues. In addition local voluntary groups offer support and activities such as day centres, clubs and visiting schemes.

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are based at the Newtown Centre in Huntingdon and provides assessment and treatment for children or adolescents under 17 years with emotional, behavioural and developmental problems. The service works closely with other agencies including education, social services and child health services. The team has a wide range of skills and experience. There are a number of professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and occupational therapists, family therapist, community paediatricians and primary mental health workers. There are also social workers in the team, employed by Cambridgeshire County Council. The service is open Monday to Friday. Referrals are accepted from GPs, and other primary are providers, education, social services and the voluntary sector.

Adult Mental Health Services provides treatment and care for people generally between the ages of 17-65. There is close liaison with Child and Adolescent Mental Health and older people’s services when patents transfer. CMHT Multi-disciplinary Community Mental Health Teams, made up of psychiatrists, community psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers and support workers, covering the areas of St Neots, St Ives and Huntingdon. The service provides for people with both acute and serious, long-term mental health problems. The CMHTs provide multi-disciplinary assessment clinics in the community setting including health centres and GP practices, where people referred to the mental health services are seen for assessment. This is the main access to the service. CMHT staff provide a range of psychological treatment interventions, and outpatient groups. Psychological treatments are provided through the CMHTs and include cognitive behavioural therapy, cognitive analytical therapy and brief psychotherapy. Staff work closely with Hunts MIND who provide a number of social clubs and a day service in St Neots. CMHT staff are located in Huntingdon and St Neots.

The Intensive Support Team (IST) is an assertive outreach team providing care and treatment to patients with severe mental illness who have persistent symptoms and problems, and are in need of intensive support in the community. The IST works with about 40-50 patients on the enhanced Care Programme approach (CPA). The team consists of nursing, OT, SW, psychology and support staff. The patient’s CMHT psychiatrist provides medical care. Available seven days per week, with some support in the evenings, the team provides assessment, support, care and treatment to patients’ in their homes and surrounding local communities, working alongside staff of housing providers, inpatient units and other agencies. Access to team is through referral from the Community Mental Health Team.

Acer Ward is a 20-bed acute admission unit located at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. The ward consists of eight single rooms and three four-bed dormitories. Special facilities include an intensive care area, an ECT suite (also available to patients on Hawthorn Ward). The accommodation is of a high quality and in domestic style. The ward multi-disciplinary team works closely with the community mental health teams, Park House Day Service and the IST. The Acer Ward team also works closely with DASH (drug and alcohol team) to provide detoxification admissions and day assessments for medication tolerance. The ward also has a crisis resolution treatment team.

The Huntingdon Recovery and Partnership Team aims to promote recovery by focusing on helping people to become involved in activities in their local community; reducing isolation, and maximising choice and self-determination. The service also supports people to retain existing and develop new social roles, relationships as well as to retain existing social and leisure activities. Additionally the service has a strong focus on the delivery of vocational and employment services with priority being placed on enabling and supporting people to retain and gain paid employment or enter mainstream education.

There are Community Mental Health Teams covering St Neots, St Ives and Huntingdon. The teams are multi-disciplinary including community psychiatric nurses, mental health social worker, psychologist, occupational therapists, psychiatrists and support workers. The teams provide a range of services including outpatient clinics, home visits and group support to older people with mental health problems and their relatives. Services offer support to enable individuals to remain at home for as long as possible, but also visit local residential and nursing homes to liaise and provide advice. The teams also offer rapid and comprehensive assessment for people with dementia, helping to formulate packages of care early, in partnership with patients and carers.

The forensic team includes community psychiatric nurses, social worker, consultant forensic psychiatrist (two sessions) and clinical psychology sessions. The team works closely with adult mental health services, probation service, courts and prison service to ensure that people with mental illness and offending behaviour (or potential offending) are assessed and offered care and treatment, including diversion from custody where this is appropriate.

The aim of the service is to provide an informal social support facility for those who are experiencing or have experienced mental illnesses or mental health problems. Although the setting is informal and social it is also therapeutic giving opportunities to discuss the nature of illnesses and problems and effects of drug treatments. Members are able to enjoy various activities and trips. The drop-in is held every Monday excluding bank holidays between 10.30am-2.30pm in the lounge of the Free Church Centre, Market Hill, St Ives.

DIAL druglink offer free counselling, advice, information and support to drug users and their families and clients in the criminal justice system. Telephone advice and support is available Monday to Friday 9.00am - 4.00pm. Counselling, needle exchange 9.00am - 4.00pm. (Tuesday until 8.00pm) every day. There is a drop–in Monday – Thursday 1.00pm - 4 .00pm.
Referrals are taken from clients, GP’s and other agencies such as health, social and probation workers. Shiatsu massage, by appointment on Tuesdays, free. The service is mainly agency based, but home visits are available for needle exchange collections or for those with severe disabilities.

The scheme offers volunteers to visit isolated, lonely or housebound older people. They visit to offer companionship for an hour or so each week. Age Concern Cambridgeshire provides a free professional casework Advocacy Service for people over sixty five with mental health needs. The service also extends to those with early onset dementia. Issues covered by advocacy are many and varied, and are led by the needs of the individual. Age Concern advocates are independent of the statutory services, and referrals can be made by anyone. The Beds & Cambs Rural Support Group is a local charity that offers a confidential listening, sign-posting and advice service
to people faced with rural isolation, stress, homelessness, financial hardship and redundancy. The group operates through a network
of contacts from farming and training organisations, local churches and trade unions and aims to identify the right source of help
for people in difficulty and work with them to obtain it. Working and living in the countryside, the volunteers can relate to problems
at first hand and act as a bridge between those in need and the traditional support and benefit agencies, which are usually town based.
They also know about specialist sources of assistance directed specifically at people employed in farming.
In addition to its information
and advice service, the group organises practical local initiatives where possible, for example, free courses on career changes are
run in conjunction with Cambridge IAG for people in rural industries who are having to consider changing their livelihoods, sometimes
for the first time.

Rehabilitation through work for people recovering from enduring mental health problems in a supportive commercial setting. In order to comply with DSS benefit regulations, people receive a voluntary payment at the discretion of management, and travel costs are reimbursed. People can attend two to five days per week.

Hunts Mind is a local voluntary organisation,affiliated to National Mind, run by a team of staff in conjunction with volunteers and service users.
They currently provide:
- Peer Focused Support - such as Borderline Personality Disorder Group
- Social Support - known as Open Door Groups which are held during the day and evenings
- Rural Development - a project that specifically supports people in the most rural areas, such as Ramsey and Warboys.

- Counselling & Therapy - 1:1 counselling and group therapy through Art.
- Volunteering - supporting people to volunteer within our service or to other local agencies or organisations.
- Information - we have a wide range of information on mental health issues and related topics for service users, carers and the general public at our main office at The Limes and also at satellite points located at various points around the vicinity.
Hunts Mind will not discriminate against any individual based on diagnosis but will provide services in accordance with service users needs. It is expected that the majority of service users will experience mild to moderate mental health problems. However more acutely unwell individuals will not be excluded from the service.
Due to their current funding criteria, the age range for service users is 17 - 65 and they encourage people to self refer. If you would like to become a service user or refer someone then please contact the Project Worker Team on the number above.
Hunts Mind aims are to raise the profile of mental health issues in the community and to combat prejudice and misinformation. They also aim to empower current and past service users to become involved in the development of the organisation at every level.

A close working partnership with local health providers also increases the opportunities for people to engage in sports and leisure activities using their local facilities.

The Visitors Centre exists to meet the needs of adults and children visiting relatives in prison. This project aims to help vulnerable people with complex health and social care needs by offering practical help and support with all aspects of daily living in the community. It works particularly with people who are reluctant to engage with mental health services and who may need a more intensive level of support. The scheme is to assist people who are being hospitalised or are unable to care for their pets for other reasons beyond their control. This is only a short term solution with a time limit of four to six weeks. The system does rely on them having fosterer’s available when they are asked to help, so there will be times when they are unable to help.
