Mental Health Services—Hospital & Community Mental Health Services
Mental Health Services are provided by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. Services are organised within four Areas, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Cambridge, and Fenland and East Cambridgeshire. The Huntingdon services provide assessment, treatment and care to children, adults and older people with mental illness in the Huntingdon Area and works with a range of voluntary organisations. All services aim to be flexible around the age boundary. The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service cares for people up to the age of 17. Adult Mental Health Services care for people from 17 and 65. The Older Peoples Mental Health Service cares for people over the age of 65, also providing for patients with early onset dementia (under 65).
The Service is provided to people suffering from both acute and longer-term mental health problems, drug and alcohol problems, dementia and functional illness. Support is also given to relatives and carers both on an individual basis and through formal carer support programmes. An individual’s needs are assessed and care is delivered and co-ordinated using the Care Programme Approach. Each service user has a named Care Co-ordinator.
There are a number of local community services provided by the Mental Health Trust for those with mental health issues. In addition local voluntary groups offer support and activities such as day centres, clubs and visiting schemes.

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are based at the Newtown Centre in Huntingdon and provides assessment and treatment for children or adolescents under 17 years with emotional, behavioral and developmental problems. The service works closely with other agencies including education, social services and child health services. The team has a wide range of skills and experience. There are a number of professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses and occupational therapists, family therapist, community paediatricians and primary mental health workers. There are also social workers in the team, employed by Cambridgeshire County Council. The service is open Monday to Friday. Referrals are accepted from GPs, and other primary are providers, education, social services and the voluntary sector.

Mosaic is a term used to describe a range of mental health day services provided by partner agencies. It is a partnership between Health and Social Services and Peterborough & Fenland Mind. Priority for services will be given to adults with severe and enduring mental health problems. Mosaic provides day services for adults with mental health problems living in Peterborough and the surrounding area, including a drop-in service (run by Peterborough & Fenland Mind - see below) and a range of therapeutic groups from anxiety management to yoga . Also offered by the statutory sector are: employment therapy workshop, art therapy, hearing voices group, complementary therapies, leisure & education, anger management, social skills and assertiveness, women's and men's groups, creative cookery, Asian Women's Group, postnatal depression group. Referral is from community mental health teams for adults meeting eligibility criteria for secondary services.

The Mosaic Partnership is the name given to a joint working venture between Peterborough & Fenland Mind and Health and Health and Social Services. Peterborough & Fenland Mind will provide drop-in services to adults 18-65yrs living in Peterborough and the surround area suffering from mental distress. In seeking to establish a service that is responsive to identified needs, it is envisaged that workshops and self-support groups will become an established feature of drop-in provision. Individuals may self-refer or be referred by another agency. Clients can contact staff by telephone or by dropping in. A light lunch is offered at a reasonable cost each Saturday.

Ward 5 is an acute adult psychiatric ward providing 30 beds for adults between the ages of 18yrs - 65yrs, who are suffering from mental health problems. The ward operates an inpatient service only and referrals are taken solely via a client's G.P. Meals are provided to suit all needs. The premises are fitted with a lift and disabled toilets.

The Gables is an 18 bedded acute psychiatric ward that takes patients (17-65yrs) from the Peterborough area who have mental health problems ranging from depression to schizophrenia. Patients work with their primary nurse in accordance with the Care Programme Approach. Referral can be through Community Mental Health Teams, Accident & Emergency, the Police, home/domiciliary visits and G.P. referral. The service covers Peterborough North, North West, South and Fenland areas. The Gables does not accommodate people with severe learning disabilities, the elderly or children. The ward operates on a 24hr basis, however the service is dependent on the availability of beds. All dietary, including religious needs, are catered for. The ward is equipped with a ramp, lift and adapted toilets/bathroom.

NHS Walk-in centres offer faster and more convenient access to local NHS advice, information and treatment. They do not replace local G.P. or hospital services but compliment them. All services, treatments and consultations are given by qualified NHS nurses without the need for an appointment. As well as offering treatment for minor illnesses and injuries, the Centre liaises closely with mental health assessment teams, and can either help someone with mental health issues/problems or refer them to an appropriate service. There is also an emergency dental access centre. All services are offered in person at the centre. The service is available 7 days a week, from 7am - 10pm. The premises are fully accessible to disabled people.

The Department provides confidential diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, as well as information, advice and counselling on all aspects of sexual health infections, issues and problems. The Department can also advise on family planning. The Department operates a self-referral system; there is no need to see a G.P. first. Opening hours are 9.00am-12.00 and 2pm-4pm on Mondays; 4-7pm only on Tuesdays; 9.30am-12.00 and 2.00-4pm on Wednesdays; 9.30am-12.00 only on Fridays. The Clinic is fully accessible to disabled people.

A specialist mental health service for Peterborough and Fenland aimed at children and young people with mental health problems and disorders, with priority being given to severe psychiatric disorders. Referral to the outpatient system is by letter from a G.P. There is a day programme for primary school-aged children which aims at reintegration back into school. A community team offers outreach work and consultation to professional agencies, and a service to pre-school children. There are two bases, one at Peterborough and one at Doddington, which covers the Fenland area.

The society offers confidential advice and information (including a bi-monthly newsletter) to people with dementia and their carers and families, as well as providing a wide range of activities to enjoy together. The office is open every weekday morning and home visits can be arranged. Referrals can be direct or by third party agency. The office is not suitable for disabled people. Social and leisure activities are held in local community facilities. Transport can be provided at £2 per return journey.PALS enables people who are physically fit but experience some degree of mental disability due to dementia to continue to enjoy leisure activities with the support of a care worker/Pal. The scheme enables people to maintain skills and gives carers a short respite. Clients chose the activity at a time mutually convenient to Pal and client. The client pays their own expenses and contributes to the Pals travel. Disabled facilities are dependent according to activity.

They can help people set goals to improve their health, give information about services and help them to access services. Health connectors are not medically trained or counsellors but they can help you to access these professionals.

PHSS provides a befriending service for people in the greater Peterborough area with, at risk from, or otherwise affected by HIV; an education service providing workshops for schools and community groups; and an outreach service to the gay community. The services are provided by phone and on the premises, in outreach and other community venues. Referral can be through outreach work, by telephone, social services and other statutory or voluntary agencies. There are no charges for any services. Volunteers help with befriending and education work. The service can e contacted during office hours on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The Helpline is open from 7.30-9.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is a ramp at the front door but no disabled toilet facilities.

4th Tuesday of each month at 7pm. Peterborough MDF Self Help Group offers people diagnosed with and those affected by manic depression (bi-polar disorder) the opportunity to meet other people with similar experiences. The group offers a safe environment for people to learn more about manic depression, to share information and to benefit from peer support. The group, which is run on a voluntary basis by its members, meets once a month and is open to anyone whose life is affected by manic depression. Those interested should contact the national office for further details.
